Nyimba Town Council wishes to refute a statement issued by the Msima Ward Councillor Petros Daka of Nyimba district, that Councilors are in Four (04) months allowance arrears.
Nyimba District is among the 48 districts in the country that were severely hit with the drought during the 2023/2024 farming season, as a result, this affected the Local Authority Revenue collection targets.
The Local Authority wishes to state that since the drought experience, the revenue collection targets have not yet been met despite its tireless effort in doing so.
Nyimba Town Council is owing Councilors allowances for a period of three (03) months, Causal workers are in salary arrears of two (02) months, contrary to the Eight (08) months salary arrears stated by the Msima Ward Councillor.
The Local Authority would like to urge the Civic leaders in the district to follow the right channel of communication when airing their grievances than rushing to the media with an unverified information.
This is misleading the public with unverified information. The Local Authority has a proper channel of communication which should be followed.
Furthermore, Nyimba Town Council is encouraging Councilors in the district to identify non traditional revenue sources in their respective wards currently, out of the 15 wards in the district only 3 wards are active in collecting revenue.
The Local Authority has already trained revenue agents in all the fifteen (15) wards, therefore Councilors working together with the Ward Development Committees should take advantage of the trained revenue agents in their wards in order to broaden their revenue base.
This will in turn help the Local Authority to meet its revenue targets in order to meet financial obligation.
The Local Authority has however, intensified the revenue collection in the district by creating the revenue task forces.
